The Contents of the Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.
Spoiler Warning: This article reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a child version of Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.
In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern was that very thief.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
