As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
