Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
