Citizens have come together around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the plan.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Essential Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Civilian Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the dread appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported another two victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the south, health workers reported.
