Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Debate
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in defense or defense roles.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this national charter," the representatives declared in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the statutes or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Response
The video message seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Political violence has no position in this nation," they stated. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our United States with great loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical online messages and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who care for this nation and swore an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their pledge to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and determine all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the representative stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
