A minimum of 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
No less than 64 people lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.
Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Community members have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Transport routes stay blocked across the area.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.

The combined action by various security forces comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
